Russ’ primary responsibilities include overseeing the development, collection, and reporting of administrative data and ecological performance measures for the state’s forest management regulatory programs, and implementation of forest restoration grant programs, as required by the Timber Regulation and Forest Restoration component of Assembly Bill 1492 (passed in 2012).  He also represents the Natural Resources Agency on the state’s Forest Climate Action Team.  Previously, Russ was the Assistant Deputy Director for Resource Protection and Improvement at CAL FIRE for over eight years.  He worked at CAL FIRE’s Fire and Resource Assessment program for 13 years.  Russ has a PhD in Wildland Resource Science from the University of California, Berkeley.  He also has an MS in Forest Policy and Economics and a BS in Forest Science, both from the University of Minnesota.  He is a California Registered Professional Forester and a member of the Society of American Foresters.
